Life in Foch: the privilege of the Left Bank

immobilier de prestige quartier foch lyon 6

The 6th arrondissement of Lyon remains a prestigious district: the prices of the real-estate market are booming, especially on the most popular roads. The Foch district with its beautiful avenue du Maréchal Foch and avenue du Maréchal de Saxe, the elegant Cours Roosevelt and Place du Maréchal Lyautey are particularly attractive.

The perfect location close to the “green heart” of Lyon, the 250 acres of the Parc de la Tête d'Or and the banks of the river Rhône. Foch also enjoys easy access to the Part-Dieu train station and the heart of the Presqu’île. In addition to its geographic location, the area is also known for its architecture and quality of housing.

Life in the magnificent buildings of Foch

The urbanization of the area began in the late 18th century and was led by architect and urban planner Jean-Antoine Morand. The long, straight roads are lined with affluent Haussmann-style buildings, period properties that offer mesmerizing views of the Rhône and delightful clear views over tree-lined squares. Beautiful townhouses stand alongside the 50s buildings and more modern constructions.

Foch: a neighborhood that has it all!

While the Parc de la Tête d'Or area has long been coveted by the middle class of Lyon, it seems to have lost some of its appeal to other livelier and more practical neighborhoods, and Foch in particular with more shops close by. The younger population and new buyers appreciate the access to the metro and the presence of ever-increasing top-quality brand names. As for foodies, they can satiate their every desire! This area is teeming with restaurants to delight the taste buds. Some of them are true institutions of Lyon’s gastronomic excellence: chocolatier Bernachon, confectioner and chocolatier Tourtiller, chef Pierre Orsi, not to mention Les Halles Paul Bocuse indoor food market. Be it lunch, dinner or just a quick drink, there is a plethora of choices of gastronomic and little-known restaurants: Relais et Châteaux Pierre Orsi, M Restaurant, Jour de Marché, Takao Takano, Le passe Temps, Le Théodore, Café du Pond, Les Apothicaires, Chez les garçons, Grand Café de Genève, to name but a few. And for entertainment without having to take the car, book an evening at the Théâtre Tête d'Or, the Comédie Odéon or the UGC Astoria cinema. Fancy a drink on the terrace? Head to the banks of the river Rhône and its barges when the sun comes out.

The Parc de la Tête d'Or just a few minutes away

The proximity of the Parc de la Tête d'Or is one of the advantages of the neighborhood that its residents enjoy. The park, inaugurated in 1857, is one of the most beautiful urban parks in France and a true green haven with its lake, zoo, botanical garden and rose garden. It is planted with over 8,800 trees including plane trees that grow to a height of 131 ft, Lebanese cedars, Virginia tulip trees, ginkgo biloba, bald cypress trees and giant sequoias.

Apart from this must-visit spot, perfect for a stroll and popular with families and sports enthusiasts, there are a number of places that offer play areas for children and contribute to residents’ quality of life. This is particularly the case of the squares located in front of the Saint-Pothin church, a religious building registered as a Historic Monument, or in front of the Eglise de la Rédemption church on Place Puvis-de-Chavannes, built by Claude-Anthelme Benoît in 1868. Place du Maréchal-Lyautey was designed in 1817 along the banks of the Rhône by Jean-Antoine Morand, an 18th-century engineer and architect from Lyon who directed the construction of a second bridge on Rhône that fostered the development of the area. The main attraction of the square is the monumental fountain, which was designed by architect Antoine Desjardins. It also has a play area and various florists.
