Ludovic & Tabata Mey present Ombellule and Brasserie Roseaux

Ludovic and Tabata Mey are key figures on Lyon's gastronomic scene, having made their mark with their Michelin-starred restaurant Les Apothicaires. In 2023, they will turn the page on this wonderful adventure to write a new, larger, more open one, with not one, but two addresses hosting two distinct universes: the Ombellule restaurant and the Brasserie Roseaux. Located just a stone's throw from their first establishment, in the former Théodore building, these locations embody their desire to go further, to assert their identity and to offer multiple experiences.

A DUO THAT BRILLIANTLY COMBINES CREATIVITY AND TECHNICAL SKILL

Ever since they met at Marguerite's in 2013, the chemistry between Tabata and Ludovic has been obvious. She embodies rigor, precision and technicality. He, a “walking brainstormer with a million ideas a minute”, is brimming with creative intuition. Together, they create a four-handed cuisine, where each dish is the fruit of a rare synergy. This complementarity found its full bloom at Les Apothicaires, crowned by a Michelin star.

But their culinary ambitions called for a new playground. A few yards away, on the Cours Franklin Roosevelt - “one of Lyon's most beautiful avenues” according to Tabata - they took over the former Théodore, one of Lyon's benchmark institutions. A lively, gourmet, familiar neighborhood, close to the Parc de la Tête d'Or, perfect for welcoming their loyal clientele and their new ideas.

TWO PLACES, ONE MINDSET

This is how, on Cours Franklin Roosevelt, the Lyonnais couple by heart and adoption opened two addresses, comprising the gourmet restaurant Ombellule and the Brasserie Roseaux. Their ambition: to offer gastronomy that adapts to everyone's tastes, without ever compromising on quality.

In each establishment, the atmosphere is enveloping, comforting and elegant. A timeless, free-spirited universe, echoing the instinctive cuisine of Tabata and Ludovic. Through Ombellule and Brasserie Roseaux, the couple use the link as a connecting thread between arts and know-how. From gourmet restaurant to brasserie, the experiences and emotions differ, but the generosity and authenticity remain sincere, orchestrated with comfort and kindness by the teams.

Menus or à la carte dishes, a cellar of over 500 references built up and expanded as new discoveries are made, attentive service in both establishments, everything is designed to offer a personalized moment.
“NOTHING CAN BE TAKEN FOR GRANTED, AND AS I LIKE TO SAY, EVERY DAY WE HAVE TO WIN TWO BATTLES: LUNCH AND DINNER.”
Tabata Mey

Human contact is at the heart of their approach. Their close-knit team, drawn in part from the Apothicaires, embodies this loyalty and attention to detail. For Ludovic and Tabata, cooking is a demanding craft that demands mastery of the unexpected, every day, every time.

“Nothing can ever be taken for granted,” Tabata reminds us, “we have to win two battles a day: lunch and dinner.”

Tabata, present in the dining room as much as in the kitchen, keeps a sharp eye on guest satisfaction. For them, contact is essential. For example, every evening at the Ombellule restaurant, a dish is presented directly to guests in the kitchen, extending the link between the table and the ovens.
BETWEEN EXCEPTIONAL SERVICE AND HOMAGE TO THE PAST

At Brasserie Roseaux, open 7/7 for lunch and dinner, Tabata and Ludovic pay tribute to traditional French cuisine. Proud heirs to a certain French art of entertaining, they restore the nobility of front-of-house service, with its pedestal table cuts and warm, precise gestures. Léa, who trained as a floor manager in the great Parisian brasseries, passionately transmits this timeless savoir-faire.

Their cuisine pays homage to French roots: every Sunday, they randomly pick up an Escoffier or a Larousse to faithfully reinterpret the great classics. Brasserie Roseaux is a return to the basics, a traditional cuisine conceived as a Proust's madeleine, where each mouthful evokes the emotions of childhood.

At Ombellule, the couple's aim is to offer a total experience that reflects their own personality. With its joyful, poetic cuisine, friendly front-of-house service and decor combining Art Deco and contemporary inspiration, Ombellule is a whole. A commitment rewarded this year by a Michelin star.
A PLACE STEEPED IN HISTORY, CONCEIVED AS AN INSTITUTION
“BRASSERIE ROSEAUX IS A TRADITIONAL FRENCH BRASSERIE, WHERE RECIPES ARE WORKED TO THE LETTER IN KEEPING WITH FRENCH TRADITION.”
T.M.

In the image of French cuisine, where the return to the essential is perpetual, Brasserie Roseaux embodies the notion of heritage, finding its name in the plant that can be tested but never breaks. This proposition is embodied in the assertive decor, the result of work carried out jointly by Tabata and Nathalie Rives, subtly bringing out the duality between sophistication and conviviality, modernity and antique objects.

The brasserie's décor blends timeless charm with a Parisian spirit: a series of five grandiose chandeliers from the USA, marble, wood, mirrors, 70s sconces by Maison Jansen and French fabric banquettes. In the corridor, plates collected from the prestigious dinners to which they have been invited, on Lyonnais silk in homage to the Lyonnais heritage. Each element contributes to giving the place an institutional flavour, with a strong nod to the Théodore of Robert Perret's era and the great French brasseries such as the Hôtel Costes.
“I LOVE TO FIND OBJECTS WITH A PATINA OF AGE AND A CERTAIN HISTORY IN MODERN SPACES - IT'S THE COMBINATION OF MODERNISM AND THESE MOTTLED OBJECTS THAT GIVE THE PLACE ITS CHARACTER.”
T.M.

The place's centerpiece: the Christofle solid silver pedestal table used for cutting meats, her “fourth child” as Tabata likes to call it, hunted down after a year's frantic search at an antique dealer in Normandy.

OMBELLULE: ART IN LETTERS

Next door, Ombellule offers a freer, more poetic experience. Inspired by the 1930s, the décor plays on raw materials, soft plum tones that Tabata is particularly fond of, and contrasts. Carefully crafted by French artisans, the space incorporates fabrics by Maison Pierre Frey, plush carpets by Maison Leleu, Macassar ebony that makes darkness an ally, canvases by painter Galatée Martin, and silverware signed by the emblematic Christofle house, which sublimates the art of the table. All these elements reflect the artistic sensibility of the chef duo.

The experience goes as far as the words, with a text by Kiel Bonhomme handed out at the end of the meal, to prolong the emotion. Ombellule was awarded its first Michelin star just six months after opening: a strong sign for a place where art, cuisine and memory come together.
A PHILOSOPHY ROOTED IN TIME

Their project is not limited to the table: it is also a tribute to transmission, elegance and the art of entertaining. Surrounded by a close-knit team and passionate partners, they give their establishments a soul, nourished by rare items and stories to tell. Everything, right down to the plates in the hallway, evokes memories, past dinners and a love of beauty.
